Taking Portraits With your Digital Camera by Alistair S Pinfold
We all enjoy snapping away with our digital cameras more often than not we will be taking portraits of friends partners. Unfortunately although portraits or head shoulders photos sound easy enough to take quite often the results are less than great.
Too close to far away or heads other body parts mysteriously missing let's face it we've all been there. to help avoid those problems lets look at some basic principles tips for taking portrait photography.
Cropped head shots can be avoided by using your digital cameras LCD screen. Everything that appears in on that screen will also appear in your picture. So use it to centre the picture take your photograph.
Professional photographers love to have a good background in their pictures. But for those of us amateur snappers that is not really necessary unless you want the background to add interest to your photograph. A good background will enhance your portrait photograph if done skilfully will tell us something interesting about the subject of your picture.
Don't worry about 'posing' your portraits as off the cuff or spur of the moment photographs can be the best. Of course if it doesn't work out you find the subject had already wandered out of shot when you pressed the shutter button then don't worry. Just delete the picture move on.
One of the best tips in taking portraits either posed or spontaneous shots is to ensure that you fill the frame use every available bit of space. Everything in the frame of the photo should add something to the portrait.
When snapping photographs lighting is very important. Many people photograph outdoors so lighting is not such a big issue. But if you are taking your pictures at an indoor location including your home you need to consider lighting.
When shooting inside light beaming through a window can be an interesting aid as it can create attractive shadows. If the light is too bright the shadows may be too dark but they can be deflected by using a white card.
Finally when taking a portrait remember to focus on the eyes as they are a persons most important revealing feature.
